Sunnyside Teacher Honored for Excellence

During the Sunnyside Elementary School honor program held Thursday, May 29th, Henry County Community Foundation Development Chair Herb Bunch presented the 2008 Teacher Excellence Award to Mrs. Stephanie DeLoughery. Mrs. DeLoughery is the Learning Disabilities Resource teacher at Sunnyside Elementary.
Bunch stated, “I am happy to be here on behalf of the Henry County Community Foundation. For the last three years, we have had the pleasure of recognizing an outstanding teacher from Henry County with a framed certificate and a monetary award made possible by an endowment fund established by an anonymous donor to the Henry County Community Foundation. There were five nominees throughout the county and the selection committee looked at each nominee’s merits including extraordinary efforts in their teaching methods, positive influence on students and positive member of the faculty.”
Bunch shared some of the comments the nominator indicated, “When I think of extraordinary efforts of a teacher who positively influences students to reach for difficult and worthy objectives every single day, I think of Stephanie DeLoughery. She works with students every day who struggle academically because learning is more difficult for them than their classmates for any number of reasons.” Bunch also mentioned, “The nominator gave specific examples of how the Mrs. DeLoughery supports students. Year after year, student after student, Mrs. DeLoughery has changed lives. She is firm but fair and truly understands the difference between discipline and punishment, the latter unacceptable. She has a quiet, steady way of building students up to help give them self-confidence for a lifetime.”
After receiving the 2008 Teacher Excellence Award, DeLoughery said, “I just love what I do. I have been teaching in special services for 29 years; and I have enjoyed all the students and the new challenges. I just do my best. I feel so honored. Thank you very much.”
Sunnyside Principal Linda Kinnett stated, “The key to teacher excellence is the personal relationships that are developed with students – the caring and trust they are happy to depend upon from those very important people in their lives. Mrs. DeLoughery is one of the excellent teachers!”
