Shirley Carpenter Edwards of Henry County passed away March 4, 2016. She was born in 1935 in Henry County, a daughter of the late Fred and Catherine Carpenter.

Shirley EdwardsShe graduated in 1953 from New Castle High School and studied business at Indiana University in Bloomington, and worked in the family business, Edward’s Jewelers in New Castle. Shirley was a life member of the Henry County Saddle Club. She enjoyed 4-H Horse and Pony Club with her daughters and later with her granddaughters. She was also still active upon her death with her great-grandchildren. She was a life member of the Henry County Humane Society and belonged to the Humane Society of the United States. She was very interested in the welfare of all animals. Her favorite dog breed was the “Rottweiler”, however, she and her husband had owned several different breeds of dogs and cats during their 60 plus years together. She believed in the work of the Henry County Community Foundation. Along with her husband, she helped to create several family scholarship funds.

Family was a very important part of her life. She married Morris Edwards in 1954. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her two daughters, Susan Edwards Saul and Catherine Edwards; four granddaughters, Jennifer (Kris) Berry, Stacy Winkhart, Claire Hinshaw and Kate Hinshaw; three great grandchildren, Kiptyn, Kambryn and Kroslyn Berry.

A private celebration of her life will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry County Community Foundation’s Fred E. and Catherine Carpenter Fund, 700 South Memorial Drive, New Castle, IN 47362.
