Betty Todd Cashner, a lifetime resident of New Castle, passed away peacefully early Saturday morning, May 3, 2025, at Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. She was 101.
Betty was born on September 1, 1923, to William Henry Todd and Nettie Williams Todd. She graduated from New Castle High School in 1942 and is one of the last known survivors of that class.
In 1948, Betty married Herbert Cashner. Betty and Herbert made their home and raised their daughter Nancy in New Castle. Herbert passed away in 1986.
An active member of the New Castle community, Betty was past president of the Henry County Historical Society and the Sorosis Literary Club. She was also a member of multiple bridge clubs.
Betty retired from the New Castle Community School system, which she supported throughout her life. A proud alumna of New Castle schools, Betty was involved with the NCHS Homecoming Committee and was co-Grand Marshal of the 2021 homecoming parade with Aileen McGrady.
In addition to her generous spirit and work ethic, Betty was known for her storytelling and cucumber sandwiches.
Betty’s parents and husband predeceased her, as did her siblings Mildred Davis, George Todd, Arbutice Joyner, and Vianna Snider.
She is survived by daughter Nancy Cashner Dietz and son-in-law Greg Dietz. Her sister-in-law, Betty Lou Cashner Wurtz, also survives, as do many nieces and nephews for whom she was a loving aunt.
A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Henry County Historical Society by Clicking Here or to the Henry County Community Foundation for the benefit of the Friends of Memorial Park Designated Fund.
