Volunteer Spotlight: Charley Willis
Serving Students, Supporting Community
Charley Willis has always had a heart for helping others, a principle that has guided his life and career. Though he grew up in Greenfield, Charley has proudly called Henry County home since 1980, settling in Springport with his wife, Emma. Together, they dedicated decades to shaping young minds—Emma for 39 years in New Castle, and Charley as high school principal at Shenandoah for 17 impactful years. Their daughters, graduates of Blue River Valley, are a testament to their deep roots in the community.
Charley’s strong connection to the Henry County Community Foundation began naturally through his role in education. “As a high school principal, I was always seeking out opportunities for students,” he shared. He quickly recognized the profound impact of the Foundation’s scholarships and TASC (Teens About Serving the County) grants. To this day, he remains proud to see Shenandoah’s programs flourishing thanks to that vital support.
For Charley, volunteering with the Foundation was a seamless extension of his core values. “I was raised in a family that believed in helping others,” Charley explained, “I believe that had a significant influence on my decision to have a career in education.” Now, in his retirement, he continues to embody that spirit of service as a dedicated member of the Foundation Board.
Looking ahead, Charley is enthusiastic about the Foundation’s future, as it expands its visibility and leadership within the county. “It’s exciting to see all of the projects that go beyond awarding scholarships,” he noted, highlighting the Foundation’s growing reach. The Henry County Community Foundation is grateful for volunteers like Charley, whose unwavering dedication continues to shape a brighter future for Henry County.
