Janet M. Koger, 82, of New Castle passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 15, 2015 at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
She was born October 22, 1933 near Cadiz, Indiana a daughter of the late Victor E. and Delilah (Modlin) Frazier. She married Lyle Koger on June 17, 1956.
Janet graduated from Cadiz High School in 1951 and remained active in the Cadiz Alumni Association the rest of her life. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Ball State Teachers College in 1954.
Janet was an elementary school teacher for New Castle Community Schools from 1955 – 1995. She spent the most of her teaching years at Greenstreet Elementary School teaching the first grade. She was a member of the Henry County Retired Teachers Association.
Mrs. Koger was a recipient of several teaching awards and recognitions including who’s who among Americas Teachers, and the Joseph A. Greenstreet award for service and dedication in 1982.
A dedicated teacher, Janet was beloved by many of her students she had a pleasure of having in her classroom. She was also an active member of Sugar Grove United Methodist Church where she served on the board as President. She was also a member of the Women’s Literary Club and served many years on the board of the Henry County Heart Society at the Henry County Hospital.
She and her husband Lyle, spent time in Florida for the past twenty years. It was their winter vacation away from the farm.
In addition to her husband, Lyle, she was survived by her two children, Leesa A. (Jim) Meyers and Kent A. (Kristi) Koger of New Castle, Indiana; five grandchildren, Kiei Sexton, Kory (Priscilla) Koger, Kelsey Meyers, Kade (Jade) Koger, and Kole (fiance’- Jessica Hughes) Koger of New Castle, Indiana; two step grandchildren, Garrett H. Reed of New Castle, Indiana, Griffin Reed of New Castle, Indiana, great grandchild, Delilah J. Sexton, Kollin R. Koger, Kannon L. Koger, and Kolt A. Koger; sister-in-law, Doris Frazier of New Castle, Indiana; and in-laws; Karl and Louise Koger of Vestal, New York; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also close family friend, Art Edinger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Francis Frazier in July.
Visitation will be from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Friday December 18, 2015 at Macer-Hall Funeral Home & Cremation Services. Funeral Service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday December 19, 2015 at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church on West State Road 38 with Rev. James Mahoney officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Summit Cemetery, Mt. Summit, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial contributions may be directed to the New Castle Henry County Foundation Janet Koger Fund, to assist senior students entering the elementary teaching profession, or the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.
