Beloved teacher, mentor, friend and devoted family man, John Scott Griffith, a cherished educator and lifelong supporter of New Castle high school, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025 at 7:08 AM following a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He was 73 years old.

For 45 years, John was a dedicated and well loved teacher at New Castle Middle school.  He served as the athletic director for 20 years and was elected to the school board in 2023. His passion for education and unwavering support of his students left a lasting mark on the community he served so faithfully. Known for his sharp intellect, John graduated Chrysler High School in 1969 as Salutatorian, and Phi Beta Kappa from Indiana University and received his master’s from Ball State University – an accomplishment that reflected both his brilliance and commitment to learning.

A true Trojan at heart, John rarely missed a New Castle high school sporting event, especially basketball games, whether at home or away. His familiar presence in the stands, cheering on the teams he loved, became a treasured tradition for generations of students and families.

Beyond the classroom and court, John was a devoted husband, stepfather, pappaw and friend.  He loved his family deeply and found great joy in their company. He is survived by his loving wife, Ronda; his stepchildren, Jeremiah, Tamera, and Kimberly; eight beloved grandchildren, Mark Van Voorhis, his cousin who was more like a brother , and the rest of the Riggs family.

A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church Family Life Center in New Castle. Rev. Dr. James Brandyberry will offer scripture and words of comfort.  Visitation will take place from 10 AM to 2 PM, followed by funeral services and a graveside committal. The processional to the graveside service will include a dedication drive past Bundy Auditorium.  He will be laid to rest next to his Mother at the Mechanicsburg Cemetery.

Known as Griff to his friends, his Legacy of kindness, mentorship, and unwavering school spirit will continue to inspire all who knew him.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the John S. Griffith Fund at the Henry County Community Foundation 700 S. Memorial Dr. New Castle, IN 47362 or www.henrycountycf.org. Envelopes will be available at the ceremony.
