Margaret Elaine Hakes, 82, of New Castle, died early Friday morning August 5, 2016 at IU Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie. She underwent brain surgery at IU Methodist Hospital in June, and during her recovery from that she experienced a hemorrhagic stroke.

Margaret was born on October 15, 1933 to the late Clyde and Vera (Reed) Harris in Craigville, Indiana, on the Reed family farm.

She attended Ball State University and Indiana University, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Speech and Hearing. She worked at the New Castle State Hospital, and also co-founded the Little Friends Nursery School and the Growing Tree, where she taught preschool for over 20 years. When she retired to 1993 she was able to devote herself to community service. Margaret was active in numerous organizations including the Indiana Retired Teacher’s Association, the United Way, the Henry County Foundation, The Agenda Club, Tri-Kappa and the Thumbody program. She was a member of the First Friends Meeting, and previously attended the First Presbyterian Church of New Castle. Margaret enjoyed volunteer work, children, traveling and her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Elaine Dianne (husband: Jeff) Karbonik of Plantation, Florida; her son, Bruce Harris Hakes of New Castle; grandchildren, Molly, Alex, Madelyn and Grace; her brother Roger Harris of Willowbrook, IL and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Owen Hakes, July 9, 2016; son, Bradley Owen Hakes, July 19, 2016, as well as her parents, several dear aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 9, at First Friends Meeting in New Castle with Rick Shoeff officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Summit Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 pm on Monday, August 8, at Sproles Family Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
