Mary Phyllis Hayes

Mary Phyllis Hayes died on April 21, 2016, just one week shy of her 95th birthday. She was born in New Castle, Indiana to Clarence and Edna Burgess Scott on April 30, 1921. She graduated Salutatorian of her class at New Castle High School in 1939. She attended Hanover College, Ball State University and IU East in Richmond.

She worked in the savings and loan and banking industry in Nashville, Tennessee and New Castle. She retired in 1991 as Vice President and Corporate Secretary of Ameriana Savings Bank, (formerly Henry County Savings & Loan Association) and as Vice President and Secretary of Ameriana Bancorp, the holding company for Ameriana Bank. She worked at Ameriana for a total of 43 years. Mary Phyllis was active in creating and leading the East Central Indiana Chapter of the Institute of Financial Education. She served as its secretary and treasurer for 19 years, retiring in 1991. During her tenure, she received the standard diploma, graduate diploma, and merit diploma from the Institute of Financial Education. Mary Phyllis was active in the Henry County Chapter of the American Red Cross, having served as its secretary for 15 years.

Additional memberships included the American Heart Association (25 year award from the Indiana affiliate in 1983, and National 25 year award in 1988). She served as an officer in the Henry County Historical Society, Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Altrusa International, P.E.O. Chapter CG, and First Christian Church of New Castle, Indiana. She was listed in Who’s Who of Women, Who’s Who in American Women, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the Midwest, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.

She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Mary Jane Hayes, of New Castle, Indiana; two granddaughters, Julie Painter of Muncie, Indiana and Jennifer Langston (Kenneth) of Chevy Chase, Maryland. She had four great grandchildren: Allison Langston, Kenneth Langston, Kelsey Langston and Cameron Langston of Chevy Chase, Maryland. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care she received from many caregivers over several years, most recently, Sue Cross, Donna Boyer, Barbara Alford, Linda Dugger, and the Henry County Hospital Hospice.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at Macer Hall Funeral Home with Rev. Mandye Yates and Rev. Wally Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in South Mound Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Online condolences may be directed to www.macerhall.com.
